Most Depressing Day

A British pyschologist with too much time on his hands has calculated that January 24 is the most depressing day of the year. What's laughable is his attempt to devise a mathematical formula to support his claim.

Because it's as ridiculous as sports writers trying to quantify "The Intangibles" and then giving the advantage to one team over another. Mathematical modeling is useful for such things as population growth, weather forecasting, and predicting the actions of serial killers (according to a new TV drama). However, atempting the quantify happiness is a gross abuse of science. It's symptomatic of our inherent need to provide order in a system that defies the precision with which numbers provide.

I agree that part of one's overall happiness can be affected by external factors that can be mathematically modelled. But for the most part, happiness is a state of mind that defies quantification.

It's unfortunate that this British pysychologist's conclusion is so weak that he's forced to superimpose formulas on top of his "research."
